Ask the seller if the lens is refurbished. As most know the Canon store is running a special of 15% off refurbished lenses and bodies. They've been out of stock of just about every popular lens for the last several days. I heard of one person buying over 40 lenses on one order and I'm sure when the rebates/sales are over they will turn up here and on FM at 90% of the then current new price. This is what Canon does to mark lenses as being refurbished.

Thing is that mark does not look like anything that could not be removed with some solvent and a Q-tip.

If buying a refurbed product on the used market is a concern you can start the process by only considering items with original boxes (though some people do buy boxes). I don't care so much about buying a used/refurb, but I do think it should be disclosed up front. Used is used to me, and the current market conditions drive the price. I don't care if the seller is making $100 on a flip or losing $400 because he bought new at the peak price. That's not relevant to me.

Obviously I don't care either since I own the two refurbs I pictured. What I don't like is when these guys wipe out the inventory at the Canon store and then neglect to disclose the fact that the items they are selling are refurbs.
