I just got it yesterday and it has a UX date code so it is a 2009 build I guess. Not sure if it really matters. I have not been able to shoot any day shots at all yet since it rained today and I picked it up yesterday. Only some indoor stuff playing around with it. It seems fine. I may take it in tomorrow and take some comp shots with a brand new one. I figured I could save about 300 bucks this way. It looks like it was taken care of with no real wear signs at all. Not even a scratch. Since I am new to all of this it is hard for me to tell how it should be performing. I did post a couple of moon shot I took last night. The only other lens I have is my kit lens and the focal range is not the same clearly so I didnt think it was a fair comparison.

Am I cheapin out here and should I just pony up the extra for the new lens? This one did not have the hood or any manual, just had the lens caps and the bag. He felt bad it didnt have any of those and marked it down from 950 to 875 and threw in a used Hoya UV multi coated filter. I will never use it but it was fine.

I thought about the 2.8 but at twice the price I am not sure I need it since I do not do portrait shots. The IQ seems good from the pics I took inside my place and tried to compare the kit lens to it but I am not so sure i am really testing them fairly. Also my kit lens seems to be pretty sharp to begin with.

I asked a simple question about getting a new one over an old one. Not sure why the hell that is over any of your heads. I guess this forum is not different than any other. I guess you guys need to get your posts counts up? That is the only reason I can see for posting remarks that are less than helpfull to a new member lookin for advice. I will ignore this forum from now on. I thought there would be peopel here that are looking to help and advise, and not troll.

You didn't exactly word it well in your original post, than went into DB mode after that.

Basically he bought a lens thats a couple of years old for 875 and is now worrying as it's not brand new. Hence why it's 300 bucks cheaper. That's the way of the world. If the piece of mind is woorth $300, then return it.

But to worry about it when you haven't even taken a picture with it is stupid.

Your question was quite poorly worded. I had a hard time understanding it. I still have a hard time understanding it. Why would you buy something used in the first place if you're going to ask whether or not you should return it and buy a new one afterwards? Surely this should be a question to ask before buying the lens? Plus, being rude is never the best course of action.

Either way, 2009 doesn't matter. Lenses last a lot longer than 2 years. What does matter is you actually using the lens and seeing how it performs before thinking about returning it and getting a new one.

You are asking US what YOU should do.......YOU are the one that must live with the choice so why ask US?

If there's nothing wrong with the lens then why return it????

Not that I'd cry if you left (I doubt that's even possible as any serious photography would be crazy to leave such treasure behind) but lenses last for decades if cared for. As was asked in a different way, why are you so wound up about such innocent replies? You sound like an old, southern, racist, geezer with such impolite responses over confusion about your incoherent rambling.

Trouble is, there was no real question, just more like a meaningless ramble about the rain, taking shots indoors, shots of the moon, your kit lens plus a whole heap of other stuff that had no relevance.
I've read it several times and have no idea what it was about.

It really is a pretty curious question. You bought a lens that hasn't been revised (i.e. no newer version) since yours was manufactured, it looks brand new, works fine, IQ seems good and you saved $300 over a brand-new lens...what reason would there be to return it and buy a new one?

None of the replies posted were rude or inflammatory (a couple asked for clarification), then you respond back in full-on battle mode. They basically answered your question by saying they saw no logical reason to return it.

I would be a lot less confused here if I knew who He is? An ebay or Craigslist seller? Or is this an authorized Canon Shop selling used gear?

Also a used lens with bearings that are already in failure mode, or an IS system about to crap the bed, or a lens with dried up seals is going to produce as good of pictures as a brand new one, so I don't know what you hope to gain there.

Do the pictures look sharp? or not? Get a tripod or a bean bag out and shoot a flat subject like a poster or a newspaper and see if you think the shots are sharp.
