i usually shoot portrait and landscape, as much ppl would. on my 30D, my 17-55 is my go to lens for everything that i shoot.

but on the 5D2, if i get the 24-70, it wouldn't be wide enough. i rented the 16-35 II for my trip to Utah and Antilope Canyon and I LOVE IT. then using it indoor in natural lighting to shoot my daughters at 35mm.. LOVE IT!

so i'm wondering does anyone use it for portrait?

Wow, even at 35mm you are subject to some unflattering perspective distortion unless you are framing very loosely. Maybe for environmental portraits where you are showing a greater environment.

at work, one of my colleagues usually do all the corporate pictures

distortion is quite present despite software correction

not the best lens for portrait

unlike the 24-70 which is excellent for this kind of picture

No, too much barrel distortion and soft corners.

35 mm isn't the greatest on the 16-35

Why is the 24-70 not wide enough on the 5DII? 24mm on full frame is wider than 17mm on crop.

16-35 would be a great lens for environmental portraiture, but not ideal for headshots, etc.

I was only responding to your comment about the 24-70 not being wide enough. IS is a different issue, but it hasn't stopped plenty of others from loving the lens. Just my opinion.

yeah, but why is the 24-70 not wide enough for you?

you'd have to be shooting at a pretty darn slow SS to worry about shake with that lens.

IS on a wide lens is less critical. 1/70th is not that tough to do handheld and it just gets better wider.

to short for standard portraiture without perspective distortion on FF. Full length on Crop.

^^ i haven't tried the 24-70 before, especially for shooting landscape. so that's why i rented the 16-35.

when i came home, i find most of my photos are in 20-21mm range for landscape. which i thought of getting the Zeiss 21mm for landscape.. but want something versatile as well. :( guess i'm too greedy.. haha
