Just got refurbished Canon 70-200 F/4L IS today fron Canon. Date code is UZ03. Just noticed that IS is extremly loud. IS kicks in action with a click type sound and it makes like constant churning/humming sound and ends with a click. Sometimes it sounds like hitting something inside of it. Is that normal sound with this lens ?

I have 15-85mm and it has literally no IS or USM sound. I understand that 70-200 IS has to be big system, but I don't know what is normal.

I bought a brand new one last week and it's the same. That's the only complaint on these lens. You may consider turning IS off if you'll be shooting video so you don't capture the noise.

I think it is normal for this lens so don't worry to much , mine also makes a lot of noise but takes some very sharp pictures ;)

Thanks a lot. Just didn't know what is "normal IS sound" and what is not. My first L purchase.

I think I am done with purchasing lenses for a good time to come. 15-85mm and 70-200mm coupled with 50mm and 85mm primes is a good collection. Maybe get rid of 50mm f/1.4 or 85mm f/1.8 and replace with Sigma 30mm f/1.4. Will have to decide at later point in time.

It is normal for that lens, not necessarily with other L's with IS though. When I first got mine I thought it would bug the hell out of me, but now I hardly notice it.

I am sure that has been said many times :) but if you keep on looking around here you you will find another reason to get a new lens ;)

The IS is a little noisier on the f/4 L IS compared to the larger f/2.8.
Like a smaller drum compared to a larger drum, certain frequencies can react differently to each size.

The churning sound is normal, I never had any sound like it was hitting something inside though, that doesn't really sound right to me.

recently bought the same lens

after posting on the web asking about the noise, everyone said it was normal until i compared it to another lens owned by a colleague, the noise was totally different

you should get a wiring noise, no click or anything else

i returned the lens and got a replacement, it is quite silent except the normal quiet wiring noise

so if yours is really noisy, then the IS is getting old or is loud

To the OP, noise is normal for this lens.

Keep IS on and enjoy the beautiful results...

Hmm, I definitely get a click on and another on off along with the wiring, but it seems to work very well - a good 4 stops.

Actually though, until I just tested it, I had forgotten about the click.

Having said that though, I had canon look at my 24-105L and they replaced something in the IS (under warranty) that I didn't think was a problem - I had sent it in mainly for something else. So it might be worth looking at if it is still under warranty.

Since it is a refurb though, I would be very surprised if the IS was not working properly.

I guess that there is some benefit from being slightly hearing impaired - I've never head a sound from my 70-200 f4, even with the gain set high on my aids. ;)

Next time I should putt ear muffs when I shoot with this lens. Winter kind of sucks on east coast. Not many opportunities to take this zoom today since it was a cloudy day.
