Which camera is better for 2x converter to keep......

I now have a 7d which I love but now I want a second body for a little of everything portraits wildlife light action you name it. But as a second body i want to know which people think works better with a 1.4 or 2x teleconveter a 5dmmii or a 1dmMk iii.
Any advice will be helpful.

It's not really a question of which body works better with an extender - rather, it's a question of which lens works better with the extender.

Your question, as posed, is really difficult to answer, since we don't know which lenses you are planning to use most of the time.

As a generality, I have found the 1.4x to work wonderfully with L series prime lenses. And the 2x will work ok in a pinch with these same lenses.

Unfortunately, I have found the IQ I've gotten with the extender to be relatively poor when used with zoom lenses, whether they be L series zooms or "regular" zooms.

Won't the 1D series allow for autofocus on slower lenses w/TC than the 5Dmk2?

I will be using it with my 70-200 and 400 5.6 L my wife go me for Christmas

The 1d3 would retain autofocus with a TC, not so the 5D2

For a 2x extender to maintain the autofocus ability with a lens it has to be a f2.8 or bigger, whereas with a 1.4x you need lenses that are f4.0. Also, depending on the make of the teleconverter will affect the compatability with your lenses. I found the Canon converters wouldn't work with most of my lenses but, when I got a my Kenko DGX 1.4 it works with all my lenses apart from the MP-E65, so check out the compatability lists on varios makes sites to make sure you'e lenses will fit ok.
