Does anyone think Canon will release something along the lines of what Nikon's J1 is?

an EOS EFmount EVIL camera is what I'd love.

I see it happening eventually, and probably in APS-C, since Nikon left themselves wide open on that one.

J1's sensor size is really unappealing. it makes micro43rds astounding by comparison

Is there a technical reason why it would be hard to make a mirrorless with EF lens mount?

I was really surprised that the Nikon one doesn't taker their lenses. It also means that Nikon owners have no special reason to choose the J1 given that they need new lenses anyway.

Lenses are designed to be a very specific distance away from the film/sensor plane. The distance for Canon, for example, is 44mm, while distances for mirrorless cameras range from 18mm (Sony NEX) to 27mm (Leica M). So if you assume an average mirrorless flange distance of around 23mm, that would mean that you would need the mount on an EF-compatible Canon mirrorless camera to jut out 21mm from the front of the camera, making it look utterly ridiculous and destroying any sense of compactness. Take a look at a Canon lens mounted on a NEX camera if you want to see what EF compatibility would imply!

it's called the Rebel series. ;)

while i enjoyed playing around with the J1, the ergonomics and handling of this camera like other mu 4/3 with a decent lens is astonishingly terrible. The front heaviness is stupid.

The idiocy continues.... Feel free to pause for a "A WTF moment".

QUOTED IMAGE

Heh...that's what, a 600mm equivalent on the V1? I kid, but what a ridiculous camera it is. Trumped only by the Pentax Q, which I'm pretty sure crawled out of some sort of Lovecraftian alternate dimension in which dwell unspeakable horrors.

(I do have to give Nikon some credit for the ISO performance they managed to squeeze out of that little sensor, though.)

.

It would be simple and totally pointless.

Take a look at your EOS dSLR and note how far it is (depth wise) from the lens mount to the sensor. Any EVIL using the EOS lenses will have to maintain this large space (called the register distance). That in turn means the cameras will have to be just about the same size as a Rebel.

And then note that most of the EOS lenses are kind of big. So what would be the point of an EVIL camera that is the same size as a Rebel and which uses the same huge lenses?

Nope, this is silly. Any maker who goes for a new EVIL (or rangefinder if I can really be hopeful here) is going to release the body with a short register distance and small lenses.

Short register distances BTW allow for very compact wide angle lenses. Take a look at the Leica M series for examples. This is what a new EVIL (or digital rangefinder) line should look like.

Small, compact EVILs are about small lenses and really couple with stuff in the wide / normal range. If you are going to shoot a supertelephoto, you might as well get a dSLR that will work well with it.
