I'm in a bit of a dilemma as to how I upgrade my UWA

Currently I have a 17 40 which I use for general landscapes and a 24 TSE Mk2 for when I have more time to mess about setting up the shot

The 17 40 is a great lens but the corners are not really up to much and the 24 TSE isn't wide enough unless I mess about stitching 3 shifted shots so I have been looking for a while for something really wide and super sharp

I have narrowed it down (I think) to either the Zeiss 18 or the Canon 17 TSE. Zeiss is obviously much cheaper than the TSE but has some strange moustache distortion on some shots I've seen and vignettes quite a lot.

Is there another lens I have missed and should consider? Which of these 2 would you get given the choice? Budget isn't really an issue.

If anyone has used the Zeiss and TSE and can give me some honest opinions would be great

Cheers

G

Cal Zeiss 21 ZE is a better lens. Not the 18mm. If you really need to go wide, I would get the Canon 17mm TSE.

The Zeiss 21 is too close to my 24TSE to be worthwhile spending the money on really

I want really WIDE......

I use my 17 40 at 17 quite a lot so I think the 17 TSE is probably going to get purchased later this evening unless someone else comes up with a better idea

If I need even wider then I can stitch a pano from 3 shifted shots as well which will probably give a similar FOV to about 14mm I guess

Samyang 14, on a 5dmarkII??? :) Are you sure? He has the budget for a Canon 17 tse. I seriously doubt that he would settle for a Samyang.

I say 17 TS-E. I also have the 21 ZE and 24 TS-E MK II. It doesn't bother me with how close they are in FL. ;)

How does one settle for the best. The Samyang is optically superior to the venerated ZE21, ~300$, and very much wide. He's shooting digital, so distortion correction isn't really a concern. I don't see how it would be "settling" for anything.

If you want to compare optics to the Sam 14, I'd say the 17 TS is the better lens. The 17 TS is superior in every way from build and mechanics. ;)

Of the two choices I'd go for the 17mm TS-E mainly becaue I'd want the TS controls. The other option that might work is the 14mm f/2.8L. I haven't read much on it so I don't know how sharp it is supposed to be in the corners, but it's worth looking at.

Why? Images from the Samyang are much better than from the Canon 14L which costs 4 times as much.
