I have a 5Dll in my cart at Vistek (Henry's is out of stock) and at $1999CA that is an amazing price. I have the funds right now. But I haven't hit the place order button, and I'm not sure why...

IQ is, by far, the most important aspect for me. I take primarily landscape and other nature shots, lots of macro with natural light, and some wildlife. I don't do studio work, and my portrait work is limited to my pets and family. My current kit is in my sig. (I know the Tamron won't work with the 5D, and that's ok - the 24-105 will be wide enough on FF for now.)

Given the lenses I have, and all things being equal, will I see an increase in IQ over my 50D?

I'm not much help, but I'm in the same boat as you. I just can't seem to complete the transaction. Maybe we can talk each other through this. :-)

Yes, go for it, you'll see IQ improvement over 50D.
I did the same 2 months ago, my 40D is now a backup camera.

Important note: be careful with Vistek!!!
If you happen to have any after-sale problems, Vistek will be hell, their customer service is simply HORRIBLE!

LOL - I"m glad I'm not the only one! I just want to be sure that the 5Dll can be used as my primary. I'd keep the 50D for backup and when I need the extra reach, and sell the 20D.

Ahh - good to know about Vistek. The only thing I've ever bought from them have been bags and cases, due to their usually high prices. I bought the 50D at Camera Canada - maybe I'll try there again... (I live in the boonies of BC, so online is my only option...)

Yes you will, go get it. Chop chop!

At least until a 5d3 is released (and after the current sales are over) you'll be able to sell a 5d2 for roughly 2k+ anyway, so you're really just testing it. Have fun.

You will be hard pressed to find someone that bought a 5DMkII and didn't see a marked improvement in image quality. That is because: A. It is true or B. They will never admit it.

The only way to find out for yourself is to: A. Buy a 5DMkII and learn for yourself or B. Find a 5DMKII that you can rent or borrow and experiment with.

Sorry I can't help you because I haven't tried a 5DMKII and if I bought one I wouldn't admit that I didn't see an improvement in IQ. LOL

What I will tell you is I have seen some outstanding pictures taken with both the 50D & the 5DMKII and I have seen some mediocre images taken with both cameras as well.......

So the other Canadian retailers that have the 5Dll in stock include Merkle Camera, Don's Photo, and Camera Canada (which is about $12 more than the other 2.) Does anyone have experience with Don's? They are the closest...

Try it, you'll like it. Besides, they have a 14 day return policy. Your 24-105 will be a new lens. Next to no sharpening needed out of camera. Nice high ISOs.

I've been wanting a 5Dii for a long time, but I guess have been thinking the 5Diii (or whatever) might come out. I mostly care about the IQ and any low light benefits the 5Dii would offer, and I'm ready for FF. I mostly shoot photos of my kids, generally indoors, and I have a feeling I would see a big difference in IQ over my 40d. (but yes, I'm worried about the AF)

As a side note, the shutter on my 40D is dying and I need to get it fixed. But, I called Canon repair a few days ago and the guy said I probably wouldn't get it back before Christmas, so I had decided to limp through with it during the holiday by shooting a lot of verticals using the shutter on my grip...:-)

So, I guess I'm partly wanting to use the 40D's problems as a good excuse to go ahead and get the 5Dii now. From what I've read and seen though, I don't think I would regret it for a minute. And, I have some great glass ready and waiting.

Except for the "some wildlife", everything you said fits the 5Dii perfectly. You can still do some wildlife, you will need longer lenses though, and take a lot more shots so you can choose later.

DO IT DO IT DO IT!!! You will not regret it. :D
