I've got some money saved up and I'm thinking of grabbing a new lens during the xmas sales. I am looking at the Sigma 70-200 OS, and the Canon 24-70L.

I have a 60D, and do both studio and outdoor portraits and have a 1 year old. I currently have the 85 1.8, 50 1.4, the 18-135 kit, and the 55-250.

I may also shoot some high school sports. I don't really have a heavily biased type of shooting right now.

If you own both, which do you find is attached to your camera most often? It seems the 24-70 would be more versatile and there is a sale on them now. How does the sigma version compare to the brick?

Based on what you have said, if I were you, I would be looking at the 17-55, first, a 2n-7n, next, then a longer lens.

I think you'll get more use out of the shorter lens than the longer.

Tamron 28-75. It's survived a 40D, 5D, 5DII, 5DII + 7D, 5DII + 5DII.

If I thought I could do better, I would have replaced it a long time ago.

Eventually I'd like to upgrade to a 5D so I am sticking with lenses that will work on full frame (if that excludes the sigma 24-70 that's my mistake). Sounds like brick is way to go and I will get more use out of it! Although, I did consider the Tamron 17-50 non vc simply because of the price. (I realize its crop only, but cheap).

Will the tamron 24-70 be compatible with a full frame and will it compete with the brick on a full frame image wise? How about focus speed?

Wow, just looked, 1/3 the price for the tamron?!

Read my previous post for the answer. Focus speed. I'm sure it is slower than the Canon but it has not proven to be an issue for me and I usually shoot in AI Servo.
It's a 28-75 , not a 24-70.

My mistake on the focal length typo. Just had those numbers in my head. If I do end up using this lens for close quarters kids sports like Jr. wrestling, will it suffice? Also, I've read some older posts, is it still a build quality lottery, or are they more consistent now?

I just got the Tamron 28-75mm yesterday and I'm so happy with it. I was a bit apprehensive about the not so positive quality control but I've also read so many good review about it. Also the Canon 24-70mm for me is definitely out of the question because of the weight. It's too heavy for me.

There were several things that lead up to me decide buying it but I ended up buying it at the store and not online. I could test it carefully myself before buying. Basically I just printed out the focus test chart and do the testing there although without tripod. But I'm not looking for 100% exact focus but just to test that there are no extreme front and back focus problem which seems to be the main complaint and problem that I've read. Then I do a test shot of real objects, different zoom, and decided that it's basically ok. So I bought it! The testing took only around 15 minutes.

The focus speed for me is also not too much of a problem. I find that it focuses faster than Canon 55-250mm and Canon 50mm f1.8. I use it mainly indoor for family stuff.
