I just got a 5D classic and a 17-40L. I keep getting some really strange "flare".

Is this a problem with either my camera or lens? As in are they defective? I should mention that this has been happening since I got the camera and this lens, so I went and had the sensor cleaned. There is no dust on it whatsoever.

That is ghosting flare. UV filters will cause this most frequently, but the 17-40 will indeed create ghosts like that with no filters on the lens. Ghosts are caused by internal reflections within the lens assembly.

I have no filters on.

That's good news. When you spend so much money at once and see that, your heart sinks a little lol,
