I was shooting outdoors last weekend and my 70-300mm just stopped working. My XTi threw an Error 99 trying to shoot with it and my Elan 7ne can't focus or change the aperture. Both bodies work fine with all of my other lenses.

I bought the lens used from B&H about 4 months ago, is it worth fixing or should I just start budgeting for a new lens?

Also, should I contact Canon for repairs or would another place fix EF lenses?

I dropped mine a couple of months ago. Auto focus stopped working as did the ability to zoom in and out. I just took it to my local camera shop. They sent it in for repair. The cost to repair was $135, and it seems to work perfectly fine.

It's a very good, under appreciated lens (especially from 70-200mm). Have it repaired.

How long is B&H's warranty on the used lens?

Before sending it to Canon I'd make sure the contacts on the body and lens were super clean and no oxidation had developed on the contact surfaces. Don't get too aggresive on the contact cleaning but make sure the contacts are clean and "shiney". If this doesn't fix the problem it's Canon time.

try and clean the contacts, if that doesn't work send it to canon....i can't think of many lenses where the cost to fix is sooo much that it makes sense to just junk a lens...unless it has something like water/dropped damage, that's a whole different story then...

I checked the contacts on the lens and both bodies, no issues.

I need to check on the warranty from B&H. It's been just over 90 days (bought it on 9/14).

Contact B&H customer service immediately. Being so close to the warranty expiration they might work with you. Also contact forum member Henryp, who is B&H's liaison here in the forums.

Well B&H got back to me and they are fixing it under warranty. The lens is going back tomorrow and they will ship it back to me when it gets fixed.

Thanks for the advice on this issue.
