Can anyone out there give me any indication of how much it might cost to have a 40D showing the dreaded Error 99 code repaired and serviced - particularly if anyone knows roughly how much Colchester Camera repairs might charge.

Many thanks

Error 99 is sort of a catch all and can be caused by many things. The charge to fix is going to depend on what is causing the error code.

Canon probably can.

Seriously though, they usually have a flat labor repair charge depending on the camera model, of course any parts would be extra.

Yep, it could be as simple as dirty lens contacts to a shutter that's gone south.
Before you panic too much, try cleaning the contacts, removing the batteries etc to see if that fixes the problem.

I asked about the shutter assy replacement for my 1D MK III and they said about $300 USD. I don't have the quote in front of me, but it would b be less because I get a discount via the CPS membership.

Search ERR 99 and see what you find. Lots of info with folks making suggestions, and not much success at fixing the ERR. But you probably already know that.

Shoot them an email and ask. May take a couple of days, but you should get an email quote return via email.

I wouldn't expect a quote withot the camera being examined. ERR99 could mean anything.

Not necessarily.
I've had plenty of Err99's as well as err01, Err03 and a few others.
Each time, removing and replacing the lens or batteries has solved the problem. From memory one of the errors was a flash problem as well.
Removing and replacing it solved that problem too.
Still, it doesn't stop that "Oh No..." feeling.
Funny enough, the three times - two in my 10D and one in my 1D MkII -I've had a shutter let go, I received no error code and the camera continued to shoot.
Before even reviewing the images, I knew straight away that something was wrong because of the sound of the shutter - an absolute give away.
