You don't know what you're missing without the 300 2.8 :D I'll happily sacrifice most of my standard zoom and prime setup to keep it. Most everything that comes from that lens is a keeper.

yeah but i just realized who much money it is!

i can get a 1d3 with 50-500

I'm sure there is :p Not willing to gut my setup further though. The 400 2.8 is too heavy and long for extended treks, at least for me. I was really hoping the 400 DO would work out, but it's just not good enough. I'm really happy with what I'm getting with a 2x tc on my 300. My time with the 100-400L, 70-200 II w/tc, and 50-500 just can't compare.

Results may vary between units, but from the short tests I ran, the 50-500 bested the 70-200 II w/2x TC on an equivalent 400mm test shot. Sigma won sharpness, which was the big one for me. Canon probably had better color, and still had better bokeh (Sigma bokeh is a bit funky) even with the TC.

Maybe I'll run the tests again at some point, but it's not high on my priority list, if at all. I'm pretty much resigned to offloading the 70-200 II at this point. The 50-500 OS will hit the chopping block if necessary, but I'd still like to keep it :p So darn versatile.

Here's a pretty butterfly from today. 300 2.8 IS with 2x II at 1000 ISO on the 7D. Tight cropping

pretty nice moko.

Hehe! You could sell the 100-400, 70-200, and 50-500 and get that 500 f4 IS.;)

100-400 is long gone--the 70-200 II and 50-500 OS together only gets me about $3000...
Darn 500 f4 IS is still going for $5700-$6200... Was not happy with that 500 4.5--don't think I'll touch the older gen lenses again. The 400 2.8 IS goes for what, $5000-$5500 still?

Something like that. The most people will pay is $6k in mint condition. So, if you sell that 300 2.8 plus your 70-200 and 50-500. You can get that 500 f4 IS and call it a day. You're eventually going to own one. Why wait? ;)

If I did that I'd have to sell off my 100L and 35L :D I like them enough that I cannot justify that purchase. You're pretty gung-ho about the 500. Didn't you imply at one point that you have one? That thing sure looks like a heavy beast to carry. The mark2 for that lens is actually justified in its pricing, based on its reduction in weight. That's huge.

The new year. That's about it. One more day in paradise and it's back to the land of hellish cold and violent crime. You'd think that freezing temps would deter crime, but you'd be wrong.
