Who knew being a new dad was going to be so much work? :)

I haven't been out to shoot anything except my new daughter lately so it was a welcome surprise to see a rather nice sunset in the making on a Sunday afternoon when I had a few minutes to run down to the lake.

Comments and critique are welcome and encouraged!

Thanks everyone!

hmm, you also could try a longer shutter speed for the water. I wouldn't mind to see what it would look like making the water smooth. However, this is a very nice picture.

I really like this image, there are however two slight areas that distract 'slightly' for me....the blown area is possibly just too big to ignore and right below, the woods are blocked up...for me a slight curve on the highlights and the darks to unblock the shadows would make this a complete winner. Clearly this was a challenging image to capture re high dynamic range highlights right next to shadows.

As it is...very good

Yah, the dynamic range was a bugger on this one. I used a 3 stop GND in camera and still had to pull the sky down 1 stop and bump the foreground up 2 stops in post. It was pretty hard to keep the white's looking white in the snow while keeping the sky how I wanted it.

I tried a curves adjustment, but it just made that blown area look drab - it looked better blown to be honest. If my cloning abilities were up to snuff, I could just cover up that area but the gradients make it difficult. Any suggestions?

I also see what you mean about the blocked shadows - thats more easily fixed and will probably do so.

Thanks for the comments.

Well, luckily I was shooting RAW so I made another copy of the file and got the sky a bit more under control and blended it into the image I originally posted here - hopefully this is better. The blocked shadows are a lost cause though, nothing but banding and noise when I try to bring them out and Ive no good exposure with them to blend.

Last year this time I was staying with my Brother-in-Law who lives right by White Tank and you didnt have much in the way of ice. We drove around Scottsdale a bit - some of those houses around Camelback were incredible...

Thanks for the comments everyone.
