will be going to japan for a few months. have a list of gear that i want to buy and take with me.

for the people that travel to japan and or around asia what is the best credit card to have that wont charge extra foreign transaction fees?

i plan to be away for a few months and need a credit card and possibly even a bank account which i may open up in japan once i get there.

Greetings. I live here in Japan.
You need to check with the card issuer to see if there is a charge for foreign currency transactions. Mine all have 1% and I have two USA bank issued VISA cards. Without the proper visa, I don't think you can open a bank account here, but I am not certain. You can stay in Japan up to 90 days on the visa waiver program as a tourist. You are not permitted to work on the visa waiver program. Citibank, I believe, allows multiple currency accounts, so you might want to check with them. Ask your bank if you can get a Visa without fees for overseas transactions. As for purchasing camera gear here, forget about it. B&H and others are much, much cheaper than prices here in Japan. Buy yen in the USA and bring some with you. Japan is quite safe carrying cash, but caution is always recommended.
Cheers,
John

Capitol One cards do not charge a transaction fee for forgien purchases. The one I use also has no annual fee, and a 1.25% rebate on all puchases.
