I went to a local Roller Derby "bout" last month and again the other night. Most of the guys there were using a 70-200, flash... and, of course, a lens hood :P I decided to go flash-free since I think it's obnoxious and it'd be more challenging to not use it :)

I got some better results the 2nd time around since I understood the rules a bit better, let me know what you think:

I'm something of a stranger to indoor sports, so lemme know what needs work. Thanks!

The first image is the best of the bunch but all of them aren't bad for your 2nd time out. I'm going on my 7th season photographing the sport and in some venues, it's necessary to use flash (off camera) because it's so dark. Don't be afraid to it.
What league did you shoot?

This was the MN RollerGirls - peek the link to see the others - I don't think I really picked the "best" ones to post here.

From the looks of it, people using flash use it as "key" and it just looks bad. I may try to use some fill-flash next time and see how I like it. Thanks.

Can I ask about the part of your post where you mention that the other photogs were using lens hoods? You seem to think that is a bad idea?

I guess I don't see the point of it, but i'm a sortof anti-hood person.

When I see a person w/ hood, I just assume (maybe foolishly) that they're trying to impress people with extra "bigness". I'd put it in the same category as flash-brackets.

Well when siting in the crash zone and having skaters crash into you skates first and many referees fall of you, believe me you'd be glad that they were on there. I always use a hood as protection.

Ha, true enough. I was sitting right where the girls go when they "swap" and I had a few close calls.

I wish the event took place in a better-lit venue, a lot more "dreary" than I'd expect.

They all seem to be held in total caves.
