I picked up a Nikon umbrella set a couple of weeks ago and this is the first time I've used it. First time I've used any off camera flash for that matter.

Shot with my 7D and 70-200 at 70mm, f2.8, 1/25 ISO 400. Lighting was daylight through windows perpendicular to subject camera right and my umbrella set 2 ft camera right on a 45 degree angle. I can't recall the flash settings (and didn't write them down) but I think the setting I had was 1/32 on my 580 EX II.

Post was to white balance and then convert to B&W with Nik's Silver FX 2.

General critiques most welcome and in particular feedback on the lighting and use of the umbrella. Any hints and tips on setting up the 580 would be very much appreciated.

What a cute model!
I think a reflector added to her right side would help brighten the shadows a little.

Nice one... maybe try a portrait (or even a square) crop? I might be tempted to lighten the darker side of her head (hair) too.

I have a reflector on my wish list for christmas so its funny you should mention that.

I hadn't thought of a square crop, I'll give that a try.

Thanks for the inpu, I appreciate it.

You could have had her next to a wall, which might have also limited her movement. Or just used a 30" X 40" piece of white art board. It's not as elegant a solution as a "real" reflector, but the light doesn't really care? ;)

I agree with the 'soft' comment. Perhaps increasing the ISO and the shutter speed may have provide a slightly sharper image, but this is actually pretty sharp for 1/25...a lot better than I could probably do.
