While having my 40d sit awhile, and then coming back to use it again, I have encountered a problem that I hope can be fixed relatively easy. I searched the forums, but only found issues with the shutter button.

When I am using my 40d, the top dial (that controls the SS in manual mode) feels like it is not catching the gears as I spin the dial. The shutter speed wont change for a few spins, and finally it jumps into gear again. Any solutions?

I don't have any solution, but I have the exact same problem with mine; so, I'll be curious to hear if anyone has any ideas (aside from shipping it back to Canon).

I haven't seen that problem pop up here, and I'd imagine that if it was at all common someone would have responded by now. I'd suggest that a trip for service/repair would likely be the only fix...the Canon Irvine service center is right up the road from San Diego!

Might not be 'common', but I do find it interesting that two of us have them having sat unused and have the issue...very strange. Probably going to be sending mine in for a look, though...

Catching the gear? You sound like the shutter speed is controlled by some mechanical device. :) You mean the wheel won't allow you to change your shutter speed? Most likely an electronic issue. Send it to Canon.

HEY! You have the same problem I had a few days ago on the 30D and fixed it for my boyfriend!! Here's the threads I read to fix it, your shutter wheel isn't turning / clicking all the time right? It feels like it's slipping or sliding and not changing your shutter speed. This is your solution! The rubber wheel is not in contact with your plastic wheel that it rests on so like most people who fixed it themselves rather than send it into Canon:

1. Shine a flashlight down into the shutter wheel area and you'll notice that there's a plastic piece under the rubber.
2. You lift the rubber wheel using a toothpick, needle, paper clip or whatever is thin enough to clear into the camera.
3. Put some super glue on the plastic wheel via using another toothpick, needle, paper clip and etc...BE CAREFUL not to let the super glue drip anywhere else but into the groove of the plastic wheel (like a tiny drop).
4. Let it sit for 10 mins. and it's good as new!!
5. THANK YOU POTN FOR FIXING MY CAMERA! and happily want to share it with you.

Read those two threads and it's the same method I used to fix mines. Good luck! I didn't see a reason to send it to Canon for a minor fix. I'm a DIY'er person, just like fixing my car, I like to fix my camera. xD

That was exactly the problem, and this was the solution. Thanks!
