My wedding photographer... OMG :-( !

I got married in Brazil 5 days ago. Congrats to me (And i am still here until January
Our wedding photographer.... Oh My God !!
My misses ordered the photographer as i don't speak a word of the langauge. (Ok, i can order a beer )
She (The photographer) was using a Nikon Crop with a kit lens (I would think that FF is the norm for a wedding?)...
She was using direct flash all the time without a defuser...
When i asked the misses to ask if i could have the RAW files she didn't even know what RAW was...
While she was working i felt like grabbing the bloody thing off her and doing it myself with a tripod as some of the shots seemed very unprofessional !
I had my 60D with me with my 17-55mm, she commented at the end that her dream is to have my camera....
We paid the equivalent of 400 British pounds..
Still awaiting the wedding photos...........

You didn't pay much, so I probably wouldn't expect much. But, best to wait on passing judgement until you actually see the final product.

I'd say you paid quite low even by uk standards? An besides you woul surely want to look at her previous work out of curiosity? If not more fool you for not doing research. But you might have a great end result, kit lenses aren't that bad in good light, an direct flash for fill is common.

Yes it is low by UK standards.
Hopefully all will turn out well...

The cost of equipment in Brazil is apparently very high, much higher than what we pay in the UK.

Well, before you hired her, I'm assuming you viewed her portfolio?

If so, you were pleased with her work regardless if she shot with a crop / kit lens or a direct flash...

Unless she falsely portrayed her profile with someone elses work....

You let your wife pick the photog! Best move ever, you have nothing to worry about. No matter how they turn out, don't complain. The memories are the important part, the photos are there just to jog the memory.

Who hired her? Did you check her portfolio? Was it your last minute decision to hire a wedding photographer?

I do find it odd when people show up to do a pro shoot with an entry level camera and a kit lens. Now a crop vs. non-crop, I don't think that's a qualifier. If a wedding pro showed up with say a T3 (no insult to T3 owners intended) and the 18-55 I'd be pretty darn concerned. Direct flash set with the EC down to act as a fill is fine, I can actually get decent results with the pop up flash when used this way.

BTW, your lens is one I dream about...esp with the current Canon rebate on.
