several other similar choices...
octagon 36", 48, 60", 70"
and the smaller softbox (24x36) is only $28.

Just search amazon for "alien bees softbox"

I personally love portable soft boxes because I do a lot of On location but for me, i recommend the apollo 28" (external link) and/or the 50". By far my favorite to use if not the octobox 60".

The 28" is about $130 i believe on B&H (Which I must thank again)
Just my recommendation. Very sturdy as well when it comes to the bending of the frame.

Canon 7D Mk2, Sony A7iii, Canon 85mm f1.8, Canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS mk1, Sigma 17-55mm f2.8, Tamron 28-75iii, a few flashes and many modifiers

I wouldn't get Apollo 28 for Alien Bees. 50" is another matter. Even then no tilt on these unless you using a boom. And if you don't use a CyberCommander you have to remove the front panel each time you want to adjust power. My main gripes with apollo. I know strobist community loves it for what ever reasons.

You can't beat prices of the fotodiox stuff. Personally I like Photoflex, more money but much better build quality not to mention real good grids for the grids.

If looking for umbrella type softbox/octabox, check out SP Studio Systems. I have their 37" Octa and love it for outdoors. Deep like Elinchrom deep octa with a nice lip. I use it with AB800 all the time.

Another nice modifier for the price is Photek Softliter, either 46" or the 60".

I don't know. FWIW, I measured my fotodiox and the actual measurements of the white screen are 30"x45".

So I guess if the black frame added an inch all around, that would come to about 32x48.

For outside work. make sure you get a foldable softbox. You really dont want to be assembling the non-foldable ones on location. The PCB boxes are reasonably priced and if you want a lot of bang for your buck the PLM system with diffusion covers gives you huge light at a reasonable price.

thanks for the info. i'm stuck on deciding between the 32x48 softbox or the 60" octabox
