i assume you need reach, so consider any of the 70-200.

70-200 f4 being the cheapest option.

It's all down to budget. How much are you looking to spend?

Cheapest lenses - 55-250, 70-300, 70-200 f/4. All decent lenses, need lots of light and with the first two, a little slow focusing.

More expensive - 100-400, 400mm f/5.6, 200mm f/2.8, 70-300L, 300 f/4 - Much more expensive but for a reason. Faster focusing, some work in much more marginal conditions.

Way more expensive - 200 f/2, 200 f/2.8, 400 f/4, 400 f/2.8 - Cost of a used car but fast both in focus and light and optically out of this world.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

70-200 f/4 is a great lens especially for the price. You can get them for under $500 used online. If you are shooting action you might want to look into the f/2.8 version, or the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8. You'll be able to get a faster shutter speed using f/2.8.

It's just a name. Tele = ~100mm plus focal length (i could be wrong)

Do you find 55mm long enough atm? That is are you currently limited by the reach of your lens?

'Telephoto' designation has nothing to do with the focal length.
It is just the design of the lens which makes the lens physically shorter than it's focal length.

Admittedly, 'tele' design is used more often with longer focal length lenses, but still, there is no firm 'number' that makes lens a 'telephoto' lens.

well if you think you need a longer lens, go with the 70-200 f4 if you are on a budget. Else, look in to f2.8 version.

yes...so you can zoom in more.

the kit lens is from 18mm to 55mm, whereas the tele starts from 70mm all the way to 200mm. So ~4 times more reach than the kit lens.
