Tomorrow is Winter Solstice Night.

Winter Solstice is when the dark half of the year relinquishes to the light half. Starting the next morning at sunrise, the sun climbs just a little higher and stays a little longer in the sky each day. Known as Solstice Night, or the longest night of the year, much celebration was to be had as the ancestors awaited the rebirth of the Oak King, the Sun King, or the Giver of Life that warmed the frozen Earth and brought about a new year.

It was the first, the original, and the archetype of all the midwinter celebrations. All of the "well known" celebrations, religious as well as regional - Christmas for the Christians, Hanukkah for the Jews, Sanghamitta Day for the Buddhists, Yule for the Wiccan as well as Dongzhi in China, Makar Sankranti in India and Hogmanay in Scotland - all have their roots in the celebration of the Winter Solstice.

May all the beautiful blessings
Of the glorious winter solstice

What about all those poor lost souls in Australia, NZ, and other places on the bottom side of the globe?

Mythology arises out of people and their efforts to explain their world. At the time that the Solstice myths gained their foothold most of the people (as well as their written and archeologically discovered records) were concentrated in the northern hemisphere.

That being said, I would love to know more about the Solstice mythology that is native to Australia, New Zeeland, etc. Since you brought it up, if you know of any links that describe their observances (presumably in June), then please post them. No one would be more appreciative than I.

And more generally, since this is a world wide forum, if anyone observes a mid-winter celebration that I didn't mention - please share!

Totally, I mean they are on the bottom of the planet and fell off long ago. I though everyone knew that.

No bubble burst, but, none the less you are exactly right. And what I actually typed is NOT what was in my mind at the time. I was (unsuccessfully) trying to say that tomorrow (Wednesday) is Winter Solstice EVE - as in the evening before winter solstice day, with the solstice night to follow on Thursday night. Kind of the same way that the 24th is Christmas eve and the 25 Christmas day, then night.

But reading what I actually wrote, that did not come across at all. Good catch.
