TeamSpeed, I haven't read the specs that closely - what will the minimum focusing aperture for the 1DX be?

I am not sure it's confirmed either way, but Canon does not make reference to anything above 5.6, so it's a safe bet.

Start of page 4 is all you care about is the answer to this question.

However, if you're in the market for a $7,000 camera, can't you just buy longer glass?

As a side note, I hear the initial technical data for the Mk 4 never referenced f8 either, so the lack of documentation does not rule out it's inclusion.

Westfall has discussed it in interviews, if you are bored some night dig thru the 1DX thread.

It has been stated by Canon that the dx will not support autofocus at f8.

Is that the same as it won't work?

As of March, we will no longer be able to say that the entire 1D series will AF at f8... :(

Yes that is a shame, I guess they must have gotten some serious feedback from their pro users that it was no longer an important feature, or they had some other reason it would not work with the new focus system.

Seems kind of odd to me that they would design a new 2X TC for their super telephoto line, and now it won't be able to focus on their latest camera on two of their biggest lenses (the 500 F4 and 600 F4) which are also being replaced.

I think there is no way around the loss of f-stops. The only other option is to not make them at all, and then you would lose the option for the 2.8 lenses.

And you can use them, you just lose autofocus. (yea, big loss, but there will still be applications where manual focus is useful)

I've just bought a Kenko DGX 1.4x teleconverter to use primarily with my 70-200 f4 L but it's also compatible with my 50 f1.8, 24-105 f4 L, 100 f2.8 L macro and 100-400 f4.5-5.6. I tried my 100-400 with the 1.4x on on my 5D2 and 7D and am very happy to say that I still get AF with it in good light, which is a bonus I wasn't expecting. I decided on the Kenko rather than the Canon after seeing the compatablity list on their website and my selection of lenses.

how bad does AF not respond when you slap a TC on your camera?

well i was just wondering in general.
the only lens I have is the 17-55mm Canon 2.8 is usm. & TC would probably only work well with already-telephoto lenses...

They dont make a 3x

Kenko makes the Teleplus Pro 300 DG AF teleconverter in 3x for Canon EF for $219:
http://www.adorama.com/KN3XPEOS.html (external link)
It would cost more than 3 stops of light and most lenses wouldn't have much sharpness left with so much magnification of the image.

Extenders aren't a cheap way to get telephoto because they usually really only work usefully well on very expensive lenses to start with. I've gotten some very good results with the Sigma 1.4x on my Sigma 50-500mm lens but it is not easy to use this way.

The 17-55 is an EF-S lens. There are no TCs that will work with an EF-S lens without some structural hacking about with an axe.
