Looks like a male house finch to me. They're the current 'nuisance' bird around the feeders this year.

House Finch...hmm not sure, I would opt for male common (red) crossbill........prima​rily feeds on fir-cones....in pine and spruce forests....mind you I am only basing it on what I know of British Birds....American birds seem to have a lot more similar looking species than we have in the UK and sometimes they even have different names for european birds.....

How would one tel compare the House finch with the crossbill ?

This is a House Finch... the Red and White-winged Crossbills have bills that are just that, "crossed" for extracting seeds from pine and spruce cones... the Purple Finch has extensive red on the head & back & little flank streaking of brown... nice shots by the way.

Like Dave says above. On looking closely at your House Finch, his bill is just a tiny bit crossed (;)) but this is a crossbill. A definitively crossed bill, plus black trim rather than brownish.
