As other have said, planes like the 747 and A380 are being retired and/or phased because of the fuel cost of running four engines vs. two over the same distance.

Another reason, which Boeing figured out long before Airbus did, is airlines were abandoning the spoke-and-hub route system in favor of the point-to-point routes so smaller twins (think A321) are more efficient/economical over those shorter flights which by defintion carry fewer people. Boeing was going to build a competitor to the A380 but abandon it when they figured that out.

Some shots from the first 747. It was used for a lot of testing thus the stripped interior.

Of all the areas in the plane, I think the cockpit is the worst looking area! The cockpit seats look VERY worn out!!

Thank you for showing this plane!

Now, the cockpit is my favourite part with all of those proper instruments and not a few TVs. People are overall ed by them, but you normally only ever select 'tunnel vision' and look at what you are interested in at the time. Be it the jet pipe temps, rpm % or the nav instruments, etc.

Insp C, I do normally do a quick proof read of what I've tryped, but being slightly dyslexic I do miss things. Sorry, I do try. Even SWMBO tells me I am trying at times -?

More like wearing out the seat of their pants mate. All the drivers have to do is concentrate for the first and last 10 minutes of the flight. The rest of the time is chatting up the trolley-dollies.

That is unless there are real problems, like their coffee getting cold or forgetting where they put their fags?

Several years ago my wife got a snapshot at Goose Bay air base of a 747 piggybacking one of the space shuttles. Not sure where they were going though. Will try to find and scan.

And speaking of heavy loads and Airbuses and the Dreamlifter 747 conversions - does anyone have a pic of an Airbus Beluga (based on A300-600)? I saw one once on the tarmac at Gander Int years ago but didn't get a photo. Amazing creatures. Nice video of one taking off in crosswinds at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZ6LU4I6aN4 (external link)

I took a BA 747 from Boston to London, the seats at the rear end are double than triple and provide a little more space for us poor passengers.
Take off from Boston was a thriller as the tail of the aircraft was shaking all over and the noise was terrible, we thought this was the end...

Some simple photos
