Haven't been using my camera much the last 3 years, so I was at a local camera store the other day buying a remote shutter release and wanting to get more into it (another topic, another day).

Anyway, it's a local camera store that has excellent reviews and great staff. On their shelf, I saw a used 5D + grip for $950. I am thinking of picking it up, but my lens collection is as follows:

L-glass 70-200 f4 non IS
Tamron 28-75 f2.8
Tokina 12-24
L glass 100-400

I'm planning on buying a 24-70L anyway, so at least the glass would be upgraded regardless.

Any advice? Should I pull the trigger, and get a gripped 5D and 24-70 (used at the store) for $1800 both or get the 7D?

Get the 5D! Noticed such an improvement over the 40D I had. I think your glass will work just fine on it, you might decide you don't even need the 24-70L! Of course if you don't like it you can always sell it for very close to what you paid for it.

I want the L because it gives so much better photos (horrible english, LOL) My dad has a 24-70L and I'm tired of fighting him over it, hahaha

That's a difficult choice to advise. The 7D is an outstanding body, but is very similar to the 50D. They would compliment each other in certain areas, but limited in other areas.

The 5Dc will give you the FF IQ and a great camera for a good price, but this camera will feel old in your hands. With the technology being older than the 50D, and a small screen, you may not like how it feels, but that may be a small sacrifice when you see the results.

The question you should ask is if the 5Dc, with slower AF and FF is what you need for the type of photography you do, or is the 7D with a 1.6 crop and super fast AF better for what you do.

Answer those questions and you will probably find the answer. If you don't need the fast AF etc. I highly recommend the 5Dc. The 7D could be considered down the road to replace the 50D, but don't knock your 50D, it is a great camera.

It depends: What are you main areas of shooting interest? If it moves, the 7D is a better choice. If it's stationary, the 5D would be a good choice. If it's both, the 7D will provide better overall service.

It's like do you need a hammer or a saw? The right answer depends on whether you need to cut wood or drive nails. Right?

Don't be so impulsive! I was, and bought a 5D2, now I am gonna take a loss in selling/trading it.

No more impulsiveness for me, only well thought out planned purchases.

totally different cameras. Make the choice based on what you shoot and whether it fits old FF or new crop.

There are alot of options for great glass between your Tamron 28-75 and the 24-70L, most of which are priced quite a bit lower. Don't think that the only way to great IQ is through the purchase of an L. :)

Sorry - I stopped right there. Don't buy either. Use what you have. No use in spending money if you haven't really used what you have now. One should only upgrade when they reach the full capabilities of their current camera. But, this is real life I guess.

5D and 24-70 (used at the store) for $1800 both

Very good price. Buy it, sell 24-70 for 1K and you'll have 5D for 800$.
Keep 28-75 - it is perfect lens on 5Dc. I have it and 70-200F4, no complains.

Thanks for the responses. I guess I should have been more clear as to what I meant when "i haven't picked it up in 3 years". I was still using it, just not carrying it with me on a daily basis. more like 2-3x/week in comparison to being "the guy who always had a camera".

Now, do I "NEED" a second body? Probably not. but i noticed that i haven't really been shooting a ton of moving objects; rather i've been shooting landscapes, macro, still-life, etc. I still believe in my 50D a lot. as a matter of fact, i love it. but seeing the price of the gripped 5D got me thinking.

I do know I could get away with the lower FPS. regarding the ISO, i'd be using the camera again for landscapes, long exposures, portraits (or trying to learn, lol) so i don't think i'd need a higher ISO rating. I could always defer back to my 50D for higher ISO shots...or am i wrong?

If you are not planning on shooting moving objects the 24-70 would likely be a waste of resources. I have both and the only reason to spend the long dollar is AF speed--the IQ is remarkably similar to the 28-75 in my experience.

I picked up a 5Dc locally based on the FF love given around here--printed at any normal size there isn't that much difference from a crop IMHO.
