I bought a used 100-400 L it works fine on AF but when I put it on Manual it is stiff and hard to focus.
Is this normal or do I have a problem.

I don't own one by my guess is it should not be stiff. I have yet to experience a non smooth focus ring. Sorry to hear about that. Keep us updated.

Mine has no difference in feel between AF on or AF off. I'm not sure how it is suppose to be but the lens has always been like that and works well so I'm assuming it's normal.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

I have never tried turning it while in AF mode but in M it is really stiff.
I fear it has a problem.

On the 100-400 there is no issue with turning the focus while in AF. It's designed to do so.

Mine isn't "stiff" -- are you saying it's noticeably stiffer than moving the ring when it's in AF?

OK, I just saw your second post -- you've never turned the focus ring when in AF.

Well, if the MF is so stiff that it's too hard to use, you could send it in! But I'd only do that if it really was too difficult to use. But I really don't MF with the 100-400 so...it would take a lot for me to want to spend the $$ to have it serviced!

I need Manual when I use my 2X TC I can use it but it is really stiff.
I thought that if I turn it in AF then when I push the shutter it would change but I guess I could try in while using my TC since it won't AF on it anyway.

I hate to send it in because I seldom use it with the TC.

I bought a 1300-2600mm and plan on using it for long shots.

I like to shoot Eagles can't get close.:)

Well it seem as though I have it working now.

I turned it back and forth several times and it freed up maybe it had never been turned by hand before.

The ring was super stiff but after a good bit of turning it freed up looks like it won't be going to Canon after all.

THANKS Guy's
I was afraid to turn it but decided if it was going to go in for repair I didn't have much to louse by trying to free it up.
My guess is the original owner never turned it before.

You missed part one and two that one. What is in a real man's tool kit. Duct tape WD40 and and hammer.

1. It it moves and it is not supposed to get the duct tape out.

2. If it supposed to move and it doesn't get the WD40 out.

You already got #3 :D

I'm sorry, real man and WD-40 should never go together. WD-40 is what you give the wife to stop creaking door. Any man with WD-40 in the house is a man wearing panties.

Real men use something like pj1 motorcycle chain lube or PB blaster. If you can buy it at a grocery store, you're wearing manties, frilly ones at that.

;):):):)
