Sports photography is all about timing not FPS. A good excuse to move up the the 1D series or even the 7D is for a far better AF system.

I disagree. There are all manner of sports in which a high FPS will give you images you simply cannot get with a low frame rate.

I do agree about the value of an improved AF system.

That's correct. I shoot cycling races with my 1dmarkIII. Considering this scenario that you shoot the race to sell them to the athletes. You aren't just trying to capture one or 2 to sell them to newspapers or magazines. The race is a long circuit race looping 5 laps. You already know that you only have 5 chances to nail the shots. The peleton would quickly pass you within 4 sec. In theory, shooting at 10 fps, you can nail 40 shots of the athletes in each lap. In 5 laps, you would have 200 shots. Of course, you will miss focus on some. Others may be not as good. Your keeper ratio will quickly drop down to 50% if you are lucky, 100 keepers.

Shooting with a slower body, your keeper ratio would be even less.

What are those scenarios?

When you try to sell the photos to the athletes. This means you need more keeper ratio than just one or 2 per game to sell them to newspapers or magazines.

1) You won't be able to get your hands on one until March.
2) Most likely even then, you may not be able to get one unless you have a preorder paid for.
3) Like most Canon bodies, there is immense hype before it comes out, and then reality will hit in the shape of reviews, etc. Personally I wouldn't buy a new body until DPReview at least has had time to review it.

YOU wont be disappointed.

On the 1Dx. Teamspeed is right. NoOne will know what that camera can do until someone posts or canon releases the full size raw files at 100%. Then we will all know. If it is indeed 2 stops better ISO performance than a MarkIV, canon wont be able to keep up with the orders. That would make it a game changer.........we shall See

Why? With the 1Dx being so close to being out, it's the worst time to buy a 1D4 for two reasons:

1: When the 1Dx comes out, it might be the most amazing piece of metal and plastic to hit the shelves in years and you'll regret not going for that instead of the 1D4.
2: When the 1Dx comes out, the 1D4's price will go down.
