So, you think no chance this time around?

I don't think that's an Adorama deal. That's more of a canon promo which ended sometime last month before Christmas. I'm also buying the 1D IV tomorrow. B&H has been out of stock for a while now and the "Notify Me" button is not available for this camera for some reason...

After a couple weeks with the 1D4, it's gotten a little more second nature as far as use, and the settings. Initially it was a huge pain in the ass after coming from the 5D2. I still think the 5D2 image quality may be better. I do miss it a little bit. The 1DX is still on my mind as it's a good combo of the 5D2 qualities (FF) and the 1D4 sports strengths.

I'm surprised you think the 5DII IQ is better. Maybe matches the 1D4, but I never felt it was better. But that is just my experience though - especially if pushing the shadows. Congrats on the better AF at least :)

Maybe it isn't. Probably on par as you mentioned. First week was hard because the 5D2 was like an extension of my body. Never had to think much to set it up for what I was shooting. The AF system on the 1D4 is really fantastic, and complicated! Took a bit of getting used to.

I'd love an X, but $7k of camera isn't in my budget. Even if it is only 3K on top of selling mine.

I'd love to hear any tips and tricks you guys use? Do you use the metering tied to AF point? Safety shift?

I am certainly no expert. For metering, I'm better at judging a scene using center weight averaging than I am using evaluative. I either use it or spot metering and I do have spot tied to the AF point.

For AF, I have the tracking speed usually set to slow or medium slow. I depends really on what type of sport / event I am shooting. There are some pretty good videos at http://learn.usa.canon.com …s1dmarkiv_tutorials.shtml (external link).

Why not consider a 1DS3? Its 5 fps while the 5D2 is 3.9 fps. Not a rocket but capable for sports. I use mine to back up my 1D3 for sports work. Great AF, weather resistant for sports and durable as a rock. This spring when the 1DX arrives there will probably many 1DS3's coming on the used market. Canon might even toss in rebates on new 1DS3's to clean the shelves.

Downsides to 1Ds3 vs. 1D4?

Edit: Won't work for what I'm doing right now as I also shoot a lot of video.

I got my new 1D4 two weeks ago and we had great difficulty sourcing one. Don't know whether demand is high these days or supply is short. Whatever the reason, there weren't many available in Australia. Mine had to come fro HK overnight.

Just use center point with expansion on, it would behave just the 5D2. Sure, there might be a couple of CFs to set up, but with a bit of reading, they make sense. Then you have ring of fire at your disposal if you need it. Not too much more to it, it doesn't have all the modes like the 7D does (and the 1DX now inherits).
