I'd have an IS one.

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

If it's in your budget, get the 300 f2.8 IS. The older non-IS version is no longer supported by Canon so if it takes a dump, you may find it very difficult to have it repaired. On the plus side, the non-IS version is quite a bit cheaper and a major failure is not really likely.

Personally I always get IS with my lenses if it is with in th budget.

Better to have IS (IS or VC) and not need it then need it and not have it.

300mm without IS, okay, but you would likely be adding a TC sometimes so IS maybe better.

I've used both, given the weight of that thing I found I got better results with IS. Advantage of having IS is you can always turn it off, you can't turn it on if it doesn't exist. I saw a nice one in the for sale list earlier today.

I had a 300mm f2.8 IS lens. I am glad I did and you could hand hold it for short periods. I sold it to get a 500mm f4 IS lens.

If you can afford it, get the image stabilized version. I don't think you will regret it.

One thing nobody has asked yet, do you primarily shoot from a tripod and what is your usual subject matter?

If you are normally on a tripod, then you won't have much need of IS. If you normally shoot sports, or other fast moving subjects, then you may well be needing a sufficiently fast shutter speed for that, that IS is less use.

Having said that, I have the IS version and (personally) would not consider the lens without it. However, I shoot mostly handheld and often with a 1.4x or 2x TC on it, on a wide variety of subjects.

They are heavy lenses, so IS will be handy if you aren't very strong and feel your arms may start shaking under the strain. I can hand hold mine at 1/50th, with the IS on, so it is very useful in low light, and when you don't need a fast shutter to freeze action.

For those long range lenses, I would say with IS.

A non IS around 1500€ is far better than nothing  ..
It was my choice, as IS version till now was out of my capabilities.

300L2.8 non IS is realy very very good ..

a few different samples out of that really versatile lens in FullHD Size ;) ...

If you can afford for an IS version, it's better, but in my case, my target is 200L2.0IS, so I wanted to put minimum cash for a 2 or 3 years use. I am happy with 300L2.8non IS results.
