Hi there,

Right, I am after purchasing a decent lens for my 60d. Initially I was going to upgrade to a 5d mkii, but my funds just wont stretch that far (which Im gutted about tbh) and rather than by the 5d and have no decent glass, I decided to take the sensible option.

So... I already own a canon 60d with a 50mm 1.8, kit lens 18-55mm, a crappy 28-80mm and the brilliant samyang 8mm fisheye.

I have started to do some model shoots and lots of band promo stuff, i do landscape and lots of live music...

I also have £800 possibly £1000 to spend (at a push)

I was thinking the canon 70-200mm - is this a viable option? I have also used the 17-55 previously. I dont mind used lenses, as long as they are in good condition.

PLEASE HELP!!!

I would still say save that money and go for the 5D II if that is where your heart is set. Save the temptation of that hole burning through your wallet.

the problem that I would have is that is quite a large jump to the funds for the 5dii with lens....and the glass I have currently, wouldnt do it justice...

I hate decisions like this..my brain wants to pop!!!

thanks for all your help, please keep the ideas coming

i'd say keep saving for quality glass. one lens at a time....

or with your current funds, Tamron 17-50 non-vc + 70-200 f4 is really your best option imo

5d classic?

Although the 60d is a fine camera.

A 5DII without lenses doesn't take very good pictures ;)

There are so many good lenses you might consider.... 17-55/2.8 IS is a top choice, but pricey. Tamron 17-50/2.8 non-VC is about equal in terms of IQ, but gives up some AF performance, and no IS (not that it's very necessary on a middle zoom like this). There is also Sigma 17-50/2.8 that's priced in between the two.

If you need more reach, 70-200 are the workhorse lenses. Within your budget, you'll likely be limited to the 70-200/4 non-IS, but might be worth checking out Sigma's f2.8 offering. It will be a lot bigger, though.

Sometime try to add or upgrade to 28/1.8, 50/1.4 and 85/1.8 for of your portrait, promo, live music shoots. These might be future purchases... get your core lenses lined up first.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I'd support the suggestion of a Tamron 17-50 non-VC. but with a Canon EF-S 55-250 IS for longer reach. These two make a great pair IMO and aren't very expensive.

Hi there,

thanks for all your help -

in the end I decided to get the sigma 18-50mm 2.8 and also the canon 85mm 1.8
I also purchased a load of portable flash accessories, softboxes etc and also a decent manfrotto tripod as my cheap jessops one has seen better days :)

thanks again

Don

Good decision. You're set, get out there and take some pictures.
