Only a month into tethering.

Have my laptop hooked up for studio strobe work. ASA 100, f/8, 1/200

EOS Utility:

  1. set EOS utility into Liveview Shoot
  2. Have LiveView/Movie func set to ENABLE

The laptop subject preview screen in DARK. I can barely see the subject to refine focus,etc..

When I select the Movie icon next to the Liveview Shoot button I can see a bright image on my laptop as I would expewct for still shooting. Don't want movie mode to be able to preview/focus the image...I don't think. Not taking movies.

How do I see a bright preview image in the EOS utility tethered to my T2i for taking still pics?

After the image is taken the review, etc... all work fine.

I think it's the exposure simulation function in live view. Turn it off.

In the EOS Utility, Remote Live View I had/have the Depth-of-field-preview (Exp SIM) OFF

When I press the Movie icon next to the Live View Shoot button it seems to all work as I would expect. Image is bright enough to use for focusing & enlarged focusing. And it allows me to press the shutter button and take stills in the EOS Utility. I guess I'll just use it in this manner. But seems confusing.

You need to turn off " Exposure Simulation " and it will work fine.

I believe it might actually be an IN camera ( Live View ) setting.

Thanks...

it makes sense since I expect the lens needs to be stopped down for depth of field preview (exp sim) in live view and this needs to be turned off somehow to view a bright image for focusing,etc... But I cannot find any in-camera setting for that. I've been thru all menus several times & the 12 custom functions,etc... Maybe it's buried in a non-logical (to me) place.

I hope I'm missing it somehow.

I don't know your camera but ........

The setting may be in the LIVE VIEW section.

You'll have to select one of the items in the menu to get to the secondary setting.

I believe you get the option of turning ExpSim on for one of four settings.....

Movie
Still
Still/Movie
OFF

That fact that when you go to MOVIE mode and it goes to normal indicates ExpoSIM may be on for STILL and off for Movie.

Go through and select various options for LiveView and see if sub selections pop up.

.

Look in the Live View/Movie Func Set

First option MIGHT be ... " LV func setting "

At least that is how it is in some bodies.

There should or might be a " Stills display " option

That is where you need to set it.

Your problem was discussed here - but solution not fully explained.

It is in the LIVE VIEW section of the menu and not a Custom Function

The only Live View settings in theT2i camera are:
LIVE VIEW FUNCTON SETTINGS
-Live View Shoot: Enable
-Grid Display
-Meter Timer
-AF Mode

Using the EOS Utility movie mode does all I want to do (I think) & with a bright display, focus, take stills
So I'll use that until I find a solution. I suspect (from the link provided by Harco) Exp Sim can't be turned off for tethering in the T2i.
