Just for gits and shiggles -

I've had the 'action video' bug, but I haven't had the urge to upgrade my dSLR body to one with video - I wouldn't want to put it in harms way, nor would I want the associated weight during these activities. In light of that, I picked up a GoPro Hero HD, and this is the first vid - this is the first part of my evening bike commute, down Broadway and Canal in Manhattan. Well after dark, this should give an idea of what the high ISO is like.

Should be a fun toy. I'll probably strap it to the boy and the dog soon, too!

(Any way to embed video in this forum?)

Hero HD, not the Hero 2. Maybe there are more lights in NYC than where you are?

Thanks guys - I'll probably add music in the future, but this time around was just a dry run... that, and as I'm the 'performer' in the video, I'm hesitant to add music that might make me come off as... I dunno - narcissistic, I guess. I'll have to find something goofball, I think. :D

So, I tried it again tonight, and I didn't get nearly as good results. My theory - the first video was on a misty night. The street and the buildings were all glossy wet - I think that that upped the ambient light considerably.

Curious on the 4x3 framing...any insight? It's an HD camera so I guess I was thrown off a bit.

There are 5 different resolution modes. The default mode, which this was shot in, is 1280*960. All other modes are 16:9, but you'll only get more than 1280 px horizontally in the 1920*1080 resolution... but that mode has a narrower FoV (170deg vs 127deg). Since the other 16:9 modes are a crop of the 1280*960, and since there's no way of seeing your framing (unless you buy a screen back accessory), I figured I'd leave as many pixels on as possible, with the widest FoV possible, until I can dial it in a little more.

Riding through the traffic like that is pretty ballsy. Guess that's the only way to do it in NYC

That is. True New Yorker! I don't think he ever stepped his foot down at a stop either.

Cool vid. Was mesmerized by your commute. I've always wanted to grab a bike and learn to do the same...

very interesting perspective, I loved how a couple times you looked like you wanted to pass a car and they moved over, I felt your discouragement lol
