I think I am in over my head with this purchase, no pun intended (okay maybe intended a little bit). Anybody here ever used one of these things?

I have the same housing but different strobes, what port do you have if you have a dome port check that you don't need a diopter adjustment on your lens.

Practice practice practice before you even think about getting wet, make sure the cogs on the zoom ring are fully engaged after you have assembled it.

It is big and bulky out of the water but light as a feather once in, the first time I lifted mine out of the water anter a 60 minute dive I had a short panic as I thought it must have filled up with water as I had forgotten just how heavy the complete rig was.

Lol I was trying to work out what the second non ink ekelite strobe was, then realised it was you tap,

You will want to get a second strobe.

Positioning the strobes is half the battle and half the fun.

The big downside is that no one will want to buddy you now as you will be spending most of the dive in one place :-)

Thanks, I got the housing used on ebay for my 20D, and bought the strobe and arm (a DS-51) from a dive site classified. Still trying to figure out what lens port to get. I think I am going to start with my 17-40, just need to decide whether to get the cheap 6" dome that doesn't allow for diopter filters, or spring for the 8" dome. Believe me I really have no idea what I am doing at this point so any advice is appreciated. The housing seems to work well, I put my camera in there and played with all the knobs, I am amazed how well they construct these things.

I plan on diving in 20-40' of water here on the reef in the Keys, sometimes even less. I really have no idea about these strobes, I mean I understand their function with lighting and bringing out the color, but I don't know the advantages of the bigger ones (other than a faster recycle time and rechargable battery unit) and the one I bought, or between one and two (other than more even lighting from seperate angles I imagine. It probably doesn't help that I am not a big flash photographer on land.

Do have I made good purchases so far? Do you have an opinion on the best dome for a 17-40 on a crop body, and whether or not I need a diopter for it to focus properly, or whether it is even a good lens for UW photos? Any opinion on 60 vs 100mm for a UW macro? If I bought another DS-51 would that be a sufficent strobe setup (if I am willing to live with a 4 second recycle time) to capture good images in under 50' of water?

Ohh and lastly, have I lost my mind buying this thing? I am still a novice diver, and definitely not in a hurry to go get carried away with this thing until I get some more diving under my belt. If that is too many questions at once I am sorry!

I don't think you will get a port to fit your 17-30.

It shows a stanard 6" dome or 8" dome will fit it on their lens chart" http://ikelite.com/web_pages/2port_canon.html (external link)

What do you primarily shoot with?

I've never used one, but you should report back after you take your first test dive in that sink with it.
I'd love to have one, I'm jealous.

I have the 8" Dome which I use with a Sigma 18-50 and a pair of Ikelite DS161 strobes.

Here is what you can look forward to
