I'm buying a 7D and I'm familiar with the grey market and USA versions. My question is, when I see the camera being sold by a retailer like Amazon etc. which doesn't state which version it is, am I to assume it's the USA version or do I need to contact the individual retailer? I know some retailers sell both versions and they label them as such so at least you know which one you're getting.
Thank you.

For the Amazon site also remember to check who the actual seller is since often it's not Amazon. Unless things have been cleaned up a lot over the past year some of the stores selling through the Amazon site didn't score very high on resellerratings.com.

well in Amazon, they have different sellers.
make sure you got a legitimate seller. I wouldn't buy from ebay because of its handful of fraudsters.

I agree.
eBay seems to be mostly imported electronics, while amazon seems to be mainly based US.
