Well it looks like camera "A" did considerably better in their test shots, however I do appreciate how they included 'real world' examples using both cameras to show that there is really not a difference for actual use. Dpreview's overall score was 72%- which works out to be the same score as the S95 strangely enough, even though each camera has strengths and weaknesses in different areas. I'm not sure how you compare 72% of 2011 to 72% of 2010, the newer must be better obviously (and more expensive).

Good review and it reminded me of some features that I didn't even know about or forgot about, and will have to try out (like slow mo video) :)

dpreviews explanation of their rating system:

This is all you really need to know:

-All scores are relative to the other cameras in the same category
-For compacts the scores are also broadly comparable across categories
-The lengths of the bars represent the weighted average of a range of measurements and scores
-The final score is calculated using a weighted average of the main category scores
-A camera's score represents 'a moment in time' - the date the review is published
-Since the scores, weights and ratings contain elements of opinion (these are, after all, reviews) you should take the time to read the entire review if you feel our opinions and priorities may not match yours.
-The ratings are produced after extensive consultation between all the editors and reviewers and after careful tabulation of all available information.

"The S100 is in effect a whole new camera compared to the S95; almost every key feature has been upgraded or updated."

"The Canon PowerShot S100 may look nearly identical to the S95 on the outside, but internally it is a significant update to the line, with its three main imaging elements all upgraded."

I totally want this camera!!

I've had several days of playing with my S100 and I am impressed. First of all let me say that my needs are for a compact "pocket" camera that produces acceptable images, jpg is fine with me. I can carry it with me when I don't want to lug my DSLR's and lenses while still giving me quality images. I doubt I'll do much raw shooting with it, but its nice to have should I feel the need.
So far its lived up to my expectations fairly well, and is a major improvement over the last p&s I bought, the SD800. Images from that camera were always noisy and lacking in detail, regardless of what ISO setting it was on. I ended up giving it away to my daughter-in-law, and just hadn't paid much attention to this line until I started reading about the S100, and I'm glad I did.

Blows it away doesn't it? Yeah my SD700 took nice pictures in sunny weather but I was never happy using it for much else. HATED using it at ISO400 or god forbid, ISO800. The noise that the S100 does have is much nicer noise to look at compared to the smudgy smeary looking crap from the small CCD sensor of old P&S cameras. The ELPH 100HS is also a vast improvement as well (I got one for my parent for xmas, played with it before wrapping it up) CMOS all the way, with the exception of the S95 and G12 which are impressive for what they are.

You say that you don't intend to shoot in RAW, yet you say you're upgrading from an SD800 because it's too noisy? You're missing out on one of the S100's greatest assets. A pocketable camera that you can stick in your pocket, shoot with high ISO's in RAW, then clean up in post.

Mine is on the way (actually I have both the S95 and S100 on the way). One of the only reasons I purchased it is for the ability to shoot RAW. To me - not shooting in RAW is like leaving it in AUTO mode - your just not using it to its potential.

Maybe so but two things I'd like to point out:

1. That's saying people who use dSLRs in JPEG aren't maximizing their potential. I'd like to think they're maximizing their time...especially the guys putting out amazing stuff.

2. When I use my P&S, I use it because I want a simple process. JPEG helps keep it simple. I can go control-freak with my dSLR in raw.

Did you lose Digital Photo Professional (DPP)? Get it here (external link). Cursing at your worse-than-a-map reflector? Check out this vid! (external link)

I don't get the "9.6 fps for 8 frames in hi-burst mode",wouldn't that be just 8 fps?;-)a

You can never miss what you don't have... Unless you are foolish enough to go out and get one sometime later. So, don't and you won't.. There will always be a newer better model down the line anyways.

Ah, ha.. The rate of fire on a M16, if I remember right, was rated at 700-900 rounds per minute. However, with only 30 rounds per clip, your effective rate was much less...

I know many people on these forums appear to have a huge boner for RAW, but I just don't feel it is a critical feature for me. Just the process of connecting the cable and getting the photos off is more effort than we should be exerting these days (see the iPhone's photo stream). The thought of then having to process them further would only ensure that I unload the photos even less frequently than I do now.

Also, do I really want 12MB RAW files filling up my drives? Do I really want to convert these to jpg every time I send to family, friends, or post online?

I'm sure some white knight could come along and refute every complaint "hard disk space is cheap" and so on, but I am not interested at this point. It's a point and shoot camera. Enjoy your RAW and the tinkering it requires. Just as some people enjoy having to tinker with linux and windows to get things working, I prefer to have thing just do what they are supposed to and do it well, without me having to intervene.

If I did use RAW, I would want it to be a hands-off process, and at that point, I may as well just shoot JPEG, which is exactly what I do. I hope this post isn't too far off topic, but it is just RAW evangelism to say that without RAW, you are wasting the camera's potential. I am pretty much one step above the average user, and trust me, the S100 fits in very nicely with my wants and needs. It's a $450 camera! The extra cost above the lower end cameras is pocket change and the build and image quality is light years beyond other models.
