Hi folks, new to the forum here. Finding the postings and the information very informative, as I am currently deciding how to upgrade my kit.

Current: Canon 30D with
Tokina 12-24
Tamron 25-75 - this is the one I am replacing
Canon 70-200 F2.8L with IS

I'm replacing the Tamron since it is having some issues, and considering either the Canon 15-85 or the 24-105L. Both are very good lenses.

I looked at some of the pics that i normally take, to decide whether I would be better off getting the 15-85 and selling or trading in the Tokina (pro is that I save about $300 + the trade in which I could apply to a future purpose, say a 30mm1.4?)....or whether I would be better off keeping the Tokina and then considering FF somewhere down the road (hard to say)

  • For a city scape, or pics in a city, about 40% of my shots were wide angle, 30% ultra wide (<15mm)
  • For a combined landscape and city scape, its about 33% and 22% respectively
  • For a landscape set its around 25% and 15% respectively

So for me the question is whether I would miss the extra 3mm on the wide end if I bought the 15-85 (i might), vs having the versatility of just taking one lens on a trip.

If I bought the 24-105 I would have two "kits"
My main kit which would be 12-24, 24-105, and 70-200
My "lite" kit which would be the 12-24 and the 24-105 - good for travel to big cities

If I bought the 15-85 I would still have two "kits"
My main kit which would be 15-85, and 70-200
My "lite" kit which would be 15-85 only, but maybe with some $ room for that 30/1.4

Oh, and with either kit I have a small tele-extender which would help

Comments?
Thanks and happy holidays.
Clark

Hi Clark,

From the above, it looks like that even with a 15-85mm, and if that was the only lens on your, that you would miss 15% to 30% of your current shots. So in that case, I would think you would still want to carry the 12-24 no matter what you got.

What's your weight limit?

Also, I don't think the tele-extender works with EF-S lenses and any lens that's not a telephoto would not work well with tele-extender simply due to the construction of the lenses.

Hi,
I have a backpack which fits what I have currently, taking out the 28-75 and putting in either lens choice would not be a problem in many situations.....but I do want something lighter for my upcoming trip to Italy (I won't take the 70-200 beast, probably everything else) - that is what I would call my 'lite' kit.

Thanks,
Clark

It's certainly a tough call,. Personally, if I was to take a trip to Italy, I would always have my wide angle, 11-16mm and the 17-55 (or something equivalent).

If I had to really really cut down on weight, then I would bring the 11-16mm (gotta love the architecture shots) and put the 50 f1.8 in my pocket.
