So i've been shooting in about 15 degree weather, and within 10-15 minutes of being outside, my battery grip starts becoming non-responsive. Half pressing the shutter won't start focusing, and then I will full press and it will skip focusing all together and just shoot. Then sometimes it will focus with the grip, and then a full press won't activate the shutter at all. The grip is canon brand, and I've been using the 70-200 2.8 IS. Does anyone have any ideas, or ideas/suggestions?

As a starter, be absolutely certain the batteries are in good shape!

Could be just a poor connection between the grip and the camera.
Try the camera without the grip for a while and see if the problem crops up again.
If it doesn't then clean the contacts on the grip before refitting it.

bw!

Thanks! Others may have better tools. I would first wipe the contacts with a microfiber cloth. Then if I needed to be more aggressive, I would use a pencil eraser for a little more aggessive cleaning.

My grip on my d80 would loosen up with time. First time--couldn't take an exposure. So--Every time I took the camera out, I would tighten the connector to make sure I could take an exposure.

This has happened to me before. I had to re-tighten the battery grip. The temperature changes and going in and out of my bag loosened it up. Not sure if you're having the same issue though...

Thanks for all the advice, I'm betting it's something to do with the contacts. Unfortunately I'm out of town and I don't have the battery door for using just the body without the grip. When I was shooting, and my grip wasn't working, I had no issues with the body itself acting funky (which is a relief). At what temperature does it become damaging to body? I know it's not nearly cold enough here, but just curious if anyone knows.

Cold shrinks stuff, and since on the camera various pieces are made from different materials it shrinks differently (amount and rate of shrinkage). Clean things up and tighten and try it again.

So, it is the shrinkage after all! :D

What we see depends mainly on what we look for.

You probably already know this but just in case someone else doesn't - I *think* there is a slot for the battery door on the grip itself so you can store the battery door on the grip while using it (but I'm not 100% sure).

There definitely is on the 5D2 grip and I suppose there roughly the same size.....
