Can anyone rate this popup tent, or alternatives in the same price range?

it'll be lit with speedlites, and it's not for professional use, just for fun toy shoots. I've heard mixed things about the quality of Cowboy Studios gear in the past - it's making me second guess this model

IMO, I think they all come off the same line in some random plant in China.. they're not that great, but they can get the job done depending on what you need to do. I've found I need to use at least 3 lights + umbrellas / softboxes to get mostly soft, even coverage, 4 is better. The material used is an OK diffuser, but if you're using bare speedlites, it won't be an even spread, even zoomed out all the way.

If I could do it over again, I'd skip it and just get some white seamless and spend some time thinking about how best to hang it and use it on a table.

hmm, thanks for the feedback - I was hoping for something really quick to setup, and not have to worry about building something, or constructing something each time

I use a fold-up lightbox that I bought on eBay, works perfectly for quite an array of subjects. I find that one single flash inside the box, with a Sto-Fen on it and aimed at the top-inside of the box, gives me plenty of light for "product shots", and other stuff as well. I never use "shoot-through" methods, I find putting the flash inside the box works a lot better, and I have more leeway with flash output power settings, which makes it easier to figure out how to light my subject the best...

I tinker with stuff now and then, boredom sets in so I throw the box together and shoot random stuff. So far I've been happy with the results...

If you want an honest opinion though, I've gotten the same results from a cardboard box with white seamless on the top, back, and bottom inside the box, with the flash inside. You don't need to spend money on a dedicated box when you can make one free, and it does the same thing.

Take a look at these two albums on Photobucket, done in my cousin's garage with a cardboard box and white seamless, and a single flash inside the box with a Sto-Fen on it...

I'm a minimalist for certain types of photography, I can't go spending money willy-nilly so I have to come up with other alternatives. If you have a flash and a way to fire it off-camera, simply take a decent-sized cardboard box and line it with white seamless, then stick your flash inside with a diffuser on it. Quite frankly, depending on the size of your subject even something as small as a shoebox with a piece of copy paper in it is all you need...

That shoebox example is quite impressive!

You gotta learn to be crafty when you're out of work for 4 years...
