Hello all. I am currently trying to finish last years school (had a 10 day hospital stay, surgery, disabled for a month or more) anyways, I am in this years school in all but one subject; English. I have to do a persuasive report, and I had got my subject picked out, but then realized there wasn't enough information for my original report, so I had to change topics. I've been thinking about what to do it on, and I thought about digital vs. film. I know some people think film is better, although the majority is for digital.
Do you think you can give me some for/against for either one? Please keep it civil...
Thanks a lot! -Darin

I wonder if the video editors on The Titanic ever went, "Sorry, I can't right now. I'm busy synching the Titanic..."

That's a pretty good idea! I know most people do prefer digital photography these days, for the convenience and speed.

That being said, there are people who prefer Film for the control over development, the image quality, and perhaps the nostalgic aspect of the process.

I personally am a Digital guy through and through, but I think this is a great idea as there are definitely some die-hard film buffs in the photography world. Good luck with your project!

Wow. Are you lucky, I saw an article by Ken Rockwell (the alien probe expert and well known camera expert) on this very subject. It's at the URL below and knowing Ken's expertise I'm sure it will have everything you need.

Hope you're well, or getting well and have a great Christmas.

yep, I saw it.   but I still wonder, if Digital is so bad, why does everyone shoot digital? I mean, some of the best photographers in the world shoot digital... Also, he seems to be reviewing CCD sensors instead of CMOS sensors... is there a big difference?

Yep, there is a difference. CCD (MOS capacitor) sensors are used where image quality is important, CMOS (active pixel) are often in phones, web cams, etc. I haven't read his article (I've gotten a lot of his expertise and don't want to overload and have my head explode), but he's reviewing CCD's because DSLR's use them.
Digital is easy and cheap, no film to hassle with or purchase. I shot film for 30 years, I'd never go back to using film. I was reluctant to move to digital, but once I did I realized what a PIA film had been. Good luck with your report.

Technical merits aside, digital is so much easier to share and therefore the social benefits of digital over film far outweigh any perceived loss in quality.

My school work and work for clients is fully digital. As stated before, it is the convenience and speed. Digital has enough things what makes it a far more attractive way of shooting.

That being said, I am the kind of guy who enjoys the nostalgic plastic containing chemicals. For my own pleasure I rather shoot film than digital. It has something that I cannot find back in digital files. Some sort of human feel to it I suppose.

To me, in most cases, digital has the upper hand. But when traveling for example, I rather drag around a film camera with a bunch of rolls. Just because I like it.

I just finished reading the whole Ken Rockwell article, and though I presume he was correct in 2006, is anything he said still true today? I mean, a T1i will take out his objection that digital wont shoot at 4,000 x 6,000, and it can be had for $500 all day long!

The only thing I miss about film is you don't have something to hold that was at the place it was taken.
When I hold the negatives my grandfather used in Greece in the 1890s I feel a connection to him.
I don't think my grand kids will feel the same with a USB drive or whatever is used 100+ years from now

If you're going to discuss digital vs film, don't forget about slide film such as Kodachrome. This was the prefwerred medium for high quality magazine photos (before digital) and there's a world of difference between slides and negative/print.
