I'm trying to acheive this effect, but it was tough.. took like 15 shots to get..

Were you using Manual Focus or Auto Focus? I'm just guessing, but maybe your AF was focusing on the wrong area.

I like this thread:

One universal recommendation you'll get around here is to read Bryan Peterson's Understanding Exposure (http://www.amazon.com …aphs-Camera/dp/0817439390 (external link)) it is an excellent resource for a beginning photographer.

+1 on this recommendation, I got this book recently and it's a wealth of information.

This book is a absolute must for all new photographers.

Check out some of his videos on YouTube. He is one crazy dude. :-)

The 18-55 kit lens is very capable but if you want to replicate the picture you posted for cheap try picking up a 50mm 1.8 for about $100. Enjoy your new camera.

can you suggest a model? just so I don't go out an get one that wouldn't work?

even if you just suggest a model that I can use as a starting point in my search thanks!

Have a look at my signature and read the guide I wrote (or am still writing) - it should send you in the right direction.

I too recommend "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson. Book helped me a lot!

That last one is the lens, EF or EFS model.
B&H would be a better place to buy, or Adorama.

Not that one, the FD mount won't fit, that's the old pre AutoFocus mount (I had this on my old AE-1 before I picked up a DSLR finally this Christmas). You can get adapters for old lenses, but the FD mount is still problematic (good lens though I had 50mm glass for this camera it's just out of date). Other mounts are easier (I'm going to mount some Pentax M42 once my adapter arrives) but you don't get AF and can only use Av mode (Aperture priority since the camera can't control this) or full manual.
