Hello!

For the enjoyable aspect of photography I enjoy exploring available light, but now have the opportunity to start doing a little freelancing for product photography for musical instruments (guitars). I'd have to take all the equipment on-site to the luthier's workshop.

I'm trying to get a grasp of what I would need. My challenge is the reflective nature of the well lacquered instruments, making me reflexively lean towards continuous lighting (halogen). However I realize that I may be approaching this from the wrong angle together.

I currently have a 5DII with the 430EXII flash, 50mm 1.4 and Tokina 100mm 2.8 macro. For the time being I am on a budget, but could spend up to about $500 on lighting.

Any advice, or links to existing threads (which I could not find) would help!

Nothing wrong with continuous light for product shots. You can use a tripod and slow shutter speeds.

Window light might be your best option, if it's available.

Thank you.

If I decide to do some work for this client (I do web stuff for him presently) I just want to make sure I do a good job and represent his product well (nothing more I dislike, professionally, than someone who takes an order and can't properly deliver).

I'll practice some more, I just wanted to see if there was a default, affordable setup that would help with the process.
