And the crack supposedly doesn't effect picture quality.

The person is wanting 450

I would pay $0.00. It is not worth it. You are going to pay Canon minimally $200 to fix any lense, and you don't know what internal damage is there.

If everything work and I get to test it, I would probably pay $200 for it. Maybe more but I think $450 is just a bit too much.

It is extremely likely that something inside got damaged when that crack was created. Do not even consider buying it. If you can get it for nothing, then the repair bill at Canon might be a reasonable price for the lens. I wouldn't spend a penny for it.

That's one nasty crack. Don't pay anything for it. If it was given to you for free then that is another story.

I'm in Canada. Isn't that weird!

Ouch, the aluminium is pretty solid there and to create such a long stretching crack a lot of force is required. I doubt i would pay much if anything for it like the others said.

Yikes. I'd walk, no, run away.

I don't know your financial situation and your desire to accept risk, but $200ish seems like the highest reasonable bet. And that's what it is, a bet. With that much visible damage, who knows how deep the problems really goes. I doubt it's repairable but the electronics and optics might be salvagable/reusable.

Edit: If you're not prepared to spend more money cashing in on a dud, don't do it...that is, if it turns out to be salvagable and is worth $300 towards a $1200 lens, and you're not willing to spend the $900, why start down this road?

2.8 or 4 ?

I'd pay $450 for the 2.8 IS and probably $250 for the f4 as long as everything else checked out

did they say what caused the crack?

If I got to test it first and it worked fine, I'd consider buying it cheap and just putting some JBweld on the crack.
