I know they were shot using the miniature effect. Here is what I was saying: On the S100 (and perhaps other cameras too, I'm not sure, only played with that function on this camera), it's a very defined line between sharp and OOF (out of focus) on the miniature effect. I wish Canon made this "line" much less obtrusive. I wish Canon made a greater effort to "blend" the OOF and the sharp parts of the picture.
I know the S100 doesn't have that sort of DOF, and I know it's the miniature effect. I highly doubt it's the "nature of the optics and the depth of field." I'm 99.999999% sure that the "miniature effect" is simply a "digital blurring" of the top/bottom of the field, since you'd need a tilt-shift lens to do it optically.
Since it's done by software (rather than hardware) all Canon would have had to do was write the software differently, so that the lines are less sharp and well-defined. I was excited to use the miniature mode, but it just doesn't look as natural as a TS-E lens does, and I think it could have looked much better had Canon blurred the lines a bit better.
Ah, got it now. It would be nice to be able to adjust it to taste.
