Great captures Drew. IQ and colors are outstanding. Only gripes...you missed straitening #4...and the stick is cut off on three. Since the stick is cut off on three another option would be to crop tight in portrait position. ;-P But they all have great color and are tack sharp.

Are all of those shot with the Sigma 70-200?

Unfortunately if I straighten 4 I lose some of the goalie and just decided to leave it there and I might have to try a different crop on 3.

Yup all of these were shot with the sigma and this is the first game I was really able to figure out just how to get the sharp images I was looking for, very impressed with this lens so far

Gotcha. Thought you had more room then that...but I see you don't now.

I'm shooting the same lens for HS soccer and basketball. Any hints into what you did to get your shots so sharp with the Sigma? I'm guessing it's a combination of different things?

Thank you. Took me a few games to really get the lens figured out and how to get the focus down to deal with since it is a little slow but it is working out just fine for me. Glad to know that my work can back up my accomplishments.

I haven't had the opportunity to use this lens in low light such as a basketball game so I can't help a lot there. But for me, the biggest thing was finding that f/2.8 is pretty much unusable to get a sharp image with this lens. Yes you can get a usable shot but nothing that I would consider a "keeper" in my book. So what I did was stopped the lens down to f/3.5 and keep my shutter speed around 1/800 to completely get rid of any motion blur. Now that required me to up my ISO up to 1250 in the rink and next game I'm going to try ISO 1600 and shoot 1/1000 to stop the puck even more. Just mess around but for my copy of this lens 3.5 is definitely the sweet spot.

Awesome! Thanks Drew. I'm not sure 3.5 will work indoors with basketball, especially without using any strobes, but it should work just fine with soccer during the day. Thanks for the tip! Your shots of hockey are really nice.

Don't knock it till you try it. I shot basketball at f/5.6 here:

Great shots. I shoot local league hockey, unfortunately the lighting is terrible, so I have to use F2.8 @ ISO 3200 to keep 1/500 shutter speed :(

I know all about the low light struggles with rinks ha having to explain them to someone trying to take pics while you are playing is difficult haha. I am very lucky to have the lighting I do at my rink.

Great shots! Just wondering what focusing mode you used on your 60d?
I've tried Ai Servio mode with some success.

I've been shotting my nephews' hockey games at ISO 2500 1/500 f3.2, but I can't seem to get the faces tack sharp. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Great photos Drew, as always.

I love how in the pic of Eric Staal, no one in the crowd is actually looking at him...and HE HAS the puck. They all seem to be in some sort of daze, or are mesmerized by something else.

I can't wait to see a photo of yours with the puck actually "BULGING" the net, or better still, popping the water bottle off, while bulging the twine of the upper portion of the net. (Upstairs where dad stashes the Playboys!!) That will be sweet, and great timing.

Also would be great to see one of the goalies get a snow spray shower. Then pics also of the ensuing bruhaha that will likely follow. (Wussy goalies - can't take a nice, cooling, refreshing spray of snow.)

Photographers do it in 1/1,000th of a second...but the memory lasts forever! ;)
