There is a blog called "Modern Mechanix", which showcases articles and advertisements from old magazines on an array of technological and societal topics, including Computers, Space, Medicine, Sexuality, Animals, History, How To and a lot more. One of the topics is "Photography". Most of the submissions are from the 1930s to the 1960s. A great many are on (at the time) cutting edge technology in photography. The blog is quite a kick, and I recommend it highly for anyone who has any interest in the history of our hobby/profession.

Also, I was thinking about my own history with photography, particularly the "photographer" that I most imagined myself becoming, and that was "Animal" on the old Lou Grant TV show. And that got me thinking about fictitious photographers in general. So the question is this: What fictitious - TV, Movies, etc - photographers can you think of, and did they affect you perception of what a photographer is/should be.

I have already mentioned Animal. I can think of another from a few years earlier, but I will see if anyone else remembers before I mention who it was.

Jimmy Stewart spying on his neighbors in "Rear Window". The guy next door is called Paul and I always thought he is a nice guy, but I haven't seen his wife Cathie for several days. Let's see....the Sigma 150-500 plus the 1.4 converter on the 40D will give me the 35 mm. equivalent of 1,120 mm. That should outreach anything Jimmy had and get me right into their bedroom.

Well, of course there's the photog in the movie "Blow-UP", as well as the ill-fated one in "The Omen". I don't think I was exactly "inspired" by them, though...:)!

the over the top Felix Unger. He inspired me to be more like his roommate. 100 trivia points to anyone that has never used a dial telephone and knows the name of the TV show.

there is a great fictional photographer role that I unfortuneately don't remember the name of in a favorite movie of mine- The Paper. Young scared and lucky, limited skills and no experience, she actually falls to the ground in a press feeding frenzy and gets a low angle shot for the front page above the fold. Inspirational but fictitious.
