Does anyone know what format the movies are saved in? My canon sx100is and sx10is videos can be easily edited on my laptop using windows movie maker but the ones on my sx130is cannot. I'm using windows vista on it. My netbook uses windows 7 but is really underpowered for that kind of thing.

I haven't tried the canon software for that. I had it on my laptop but never used it and I needed HD room so I took it off. I might have to put it back on.

Not being able to make nice movies with my 130is has been a big disadvantage. I had so much fun doing that with my others.

the video format is h264 in a .mov file container. its the same as all the newer canon point and shoot cameras such as the sx130is. i do not believe any of the windows movie maker versions support the .mov container since its an Apple format.

Taking videos is absolutly useless if you can't edit them! :(

the new version, "windows live movie maker", allows importation of .mov but does not include the h264 codec. one might need to install the h264 codec if its not installed already. windows might also install these for you. codecs are independent of the movie maker program. thus, support for .mov file format doesnt mean theres support for the h.264 video format.

another method you can try is using a video converter and convert the .mov h264 files into .mpg or .avi files. then use movie maker for editing. sorry, i dont have any recommendations for converters.

sorry i havent tried the canon software yet.

Yes, they are in .MOV format, which processes just perfectly through my Windows Live Movie Maker.
check for an update to install, videos from our T1i and T2i used to not work (Also MOV) but since I installed an update, it works well, along with feutures like controlling your speed (.125X - 64X), etc.

I wonder if the video editors on The Titanic ever went, "Sorry, I can't right now. I'm busy synching the Titanic..."

thats good, that means you do have the codec or you have windows 7. windows 7 includes the h.264 codec. however, for some, the codecs might or might not have been installed. this is documented by microsoft and a quick google search will show you tons of people have this common issue with h.264, .mov and movie maker:

My vista already has old windows movie maker. I wonder if I can uninstall it and install windows live movie maker instead.

I have it on my netbook and at first I thought it didn't work but now I think the netbook is too underpowered to work it. Maybe I can just install the codec on my bigger computer.

I'll think of something. I should be getting my camera today, I can't wait to have something small to carry with me.

you can download the new version of windows live movie maker from microsoft's website. you may or may not already have the codec on your vista computer.

editing h.264 is more cpu intensive than older formats such as mpg or motion jpg (canon's old video format). hence your netbook might struggle.

Okay, gotcha. Didnt realize that that was different between 7 and vista. I don't use our Vista computer, it is so slow, you would think it has 1 mb of RAM.

Helping wife with Elph 100. I'm not the smartest, nor the stupidest guy on the planet, but WHY do point and shoot cameras have to be so freaking difficult to navigate and understand?!!!

For heaven's sake, the 5D2 is more a 'point-and-shoot' camera than this little devil! This camera is more like point and PRAY!

I got it!!!! I got it!!! I really like it! I havn't had problems with the buttons but I can see how someone with large hands might. I kind of like them where they won't get accidently pushed.

I'm really impressed with how it does macro! It works very well on auto, I don't use auto in my other cameras but I might with this one.

I havn't had trouble navigating but I'm used to the canon software and it's almost exactly alike between cameras. I can see how it would confuse a newbie to canon. The wheel is a little more intuitive because the functions are more separtated from the modes. It's not really slowing me down any yet. It will take nice snapshots, which is what I got it for. The movies are really nice too, except I cannot edit them yet.

I'm having that problem with the .mov files that I had mentioned. I installed that codec but it still won't work. I'm going to try and download windows live movie maker. I'll post sample pics soon.

Most people don't know or don't want to know anything about exposure settings. So having only two exposure modes is a bonus.

You have +/- EV compensation, and you can pick ISO, so there is enough options to get the shot you want in most situations.
