My son got me an ipod touch for xmas and I want to put some of my photos on it. What would be a good file size? I was searching the ipod site and it seems the device optimizes the photos but I can't seem to find if it's better to reduce the size first or what size it optimizes to?

According to Apple the screen size is 960x460 pixels
That is also the same as the iPhone

Thanks; I will give that a go. I am trying to save room on this device since it is only the 8gb model.

It may only be 960 px but what happens when you zoom in? Does the quality drop due to pixelation?

I use the same size files as I would post here, 1024 on the longest side and a file size of 150kb. The photos look great even when zoomed in on the wife's itouch or my iphone.

When you say you are zooming in are you zooming to a "100% view" where you are seeing part of your shot in the native resolution, or are you saying that you can zoom beyond 100%? Can the ixxx do that?

I remember reading somewhere that the best quality on i-devices comes from feeding them images at twice the display size.

eg, I feed my iPad images at 2048 and let it compress them by half to 1024 and they're razor sharp.

I'm not sure of the amount, it appears to be about 400% max. My images are near 100% in the normal view, 1024 pixels on a 960 screen. The normal zoom that the iphone/touch will hold is near 300%. And it can be temporarily zoomed to 400% if you hold your two fingers on the screen, but if you remove your fingers, it snaps back to 300%.
At the max zoom, the images get a little rough, but at the normal zoom they look pretty good.

^^ This ^^ makes perfect sense.
I use 1024 only because I have already resized and compressed my images for web use.

My Zenfoloio App allows me to save to the iPad as well so I do snag the occasional image at 1024 since, like you, I already have that size uploaded for sharing here.
