I own it and the 24-105 and don't use either on my 7D. I finally broke down and bought a 17-55 when Adorama dropped the price down to $950 a while back. For me, 24mm isn't wide enough on 1.6x bodies and barely wide enough for certain things on 1.3x bodies. My advice if you are shooting a 1.6x body is the 17-55 or the 15-85 if you need more range.

1DmkIV coupled with a 24-70 is my go to combo on the red carpet and has served me well.

I shot it with my 7D and was very happy with it. When I got the 5DII and used it with that camera, it was "magic". There is just something about the images with the 5DII that I cannot replicate with the 7D.
In regards to width, that depends on what you may be shooting.

just a few of my thoughts...

The 24-70 is not walk-around lens on crop. I sold mine to get 17-55.

I use the 24-70 on my 7D all the time....no matter what lens you have, you will find situations you need something wider, longer, sharper, etc. I find the 24-70 is a great walk around lens, I find the longer reach is much more important than the 17-55 offers. Good luck with your purchase.

Based on your signature you must have had hard time using it on your 5D MKII. :)

I would surely miss 55-70 range as I use it a lot for my work.

This. You will hear some say L lenses don't work well on croppers. They are wonderful and sharp but wrong focal ranges at 1.6x. Having said that I have put the 17-40 on my 7D a lot but that has been fixed with the 17-55.

I don't use my 20D very often anymore, but when I sold off most of my Canon gear I kept my 24-70 f/2.8L (for me to use) and my 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 II USM (for my daughter to use).

The 24-70 is a very good lens. Accurate/quiet AF and built like a tank ... just a bit soft (unfortunately, by design) wide open at 70mm. Not a great choice if you don't like heavy gear though. :)

It's called the brick for a reason. ;)

I sold my first copy because at the time I just couldn't handle the extra weight and didn't really need the extra stop. Now I have both again and they both are very useful.

you would think the 24-70 is a "good choice" on a crop until you use it on FF. then you realize why this lens was made. on a crop, don't bother unless that is the specific FL you're looking for, altho the 17-55 is a much better option.

I thought about the 24-70 when making my decision too but wanted wider so I got the 17-55 2.8

I used the 24-70 on my 450D (x1.6) for a good year before I went FF and I always thought it performed extremely well. There were certain situations in which I wished it was a bit wider but overall it was fantastic.
