Does anyone else take part in the Christmas bird count? It was interesting to go on the site and look at historical results for my area, many of which I've never seen before.

The one for my area is tomorrow, and I have all my seed, suet, berries, etc... ready for them.

This will be my second year taking part, I only wish I had a zoom lens so I could get some pictures.

Here are my totals for the day.

The # represents the most of each species seen at one time.

European Starling - 26 (I've only noticed these birds around my yard the last 2 years - sometimes in huge #'s)
Mourning Dove - 18
Dark Eyed Junco - 11
American Goldfinch - 9
Blue Jay - 7
Crow - 5
Black capped chickadee - 5
Ring necked pheasant - 3 (most days there is a group of 5 or 6 that come together)
Song sparrow - 1
Downy woodpecker - 1
Pileated woodpecker - 1

Niceeee! Hope you had fun there. I would LOVE to see some pheasant personally!
I took part a couple of times maybe 4 or 5 yrs ago. It was fun although it was quite cold out there.
Thanks for sharing the info Shane.

For this count people keep track of who visits their yard during the day. Altogether I watched for about 2.5 hrs throughout the day and if I got too cold I just went inside and looked out the windows with my binoculars. :-)

I always keep an eye on who is visiting the feeder but when you really pay attention there's likely a species up in the tree that you've never seen before or that doesn't come around too often. That was the case with the song sparrow. I'm sure they're always around my yard but I don't recall seeing it at the feeder before.

I'm hoping someday to see a cardinal. They been moving further north over the years but I've yet to see one. Looking on the results from last years count though there were 2 spotted in my area.
